Basic structure of TVS
It mainly includes an insulating shell (ceramic or glass material), a metal shield, a pair of main electrodes separated by d and a trigger electrode. The vacuum degree in the tube is generally maintained at about 1.33 ×10-4 Pa. The insulating shell ensures the internal vacancy, and at the same time plays the role of insulation and support; the metal shield can adjust the electric field distribution inside the TVS, and prevents metal vapor from depositing on the inner surface of the insulating shell during arcing, resulting in a decrease in the insulation strength of the inner surface of the shell; The main electrode conducts a large current, and its structural design has an important impact on the performance of the TVS; the trigger electrode is connected to an external trigger source to generate the initial plasma.
The working process of TVS
It usually includes two phases, namely the trigger phase and the main gap conduction phase. The trigger phase provides initial plasma for the main gap. As a field-breakdown TVS, the initial plasma is generated by the tip discharge of the trigger needle and diffuses into the main gap. Under the action of the electric field in the main gap, the charged particles gradually develop, and finally a metal vapor arc is established, and the main gap is completely conducted. When the discharge current of the main gap crosses zero, the switch is cut off.
